Urban Occupations urbaines – Call for Submissions

ALTER (Auberge Alternative’s arts centre), in collaboration with the Griffintown Cultural Corridor, invites artists to submit proposals for a one month residency as part of Urban Occupations urbaines, a curated series of public art installations and performance interventions to be programmed monthly between September 2010 and August 2011.

The project aims to promote the cultural landscape of Griffintown by evoking the traces of its built and spatial history. Griffintown is a post‐industrial neighbourhood that is presently in grave danger of disappearing due to corporate real‐estate development. Public art projects and interventions have the capacity to bring the spatial and political histories of certain sites in the built environment into public consciousness.

The overarching aim of Urban Occupations urbaines is to bring together a diverse group of local and international independent artists to creatively and critically examine the performative agency of this site in the city.

Proposed projects should include exhibition of artworks/documentation and/or a series of performances/workshops to be presented at ALTER.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: AUGUST 13TH, 2010
RESIDENCY DATES: NOVEMBER or DECEMBER 2010 (30 days)

Open to all international artists with min. 2 years max. 5 years of practice.

Submissions should include the following:
1. An artist CV and statement.
2. Relevant support material (ie. photos, texts, links to websites, sound and
video projects etc).
3. A 500 word proposal outlining the project description and indicating your
interest in collaborating/creating within context of urban spaces and
historic architecture, as well as your intentions of involving the hostel and its clientele in the project.
4. A working title for your project.
5. Contact information such as a phone number or email where you can be
reached.

Send applications to Florence S. Larose at alter [at] auberge-alternative [dot] qc [dot] ca

Selected projects will be announced by August 22nd 2010.
